Would you want the rows in your garden to be labelled with singulars or plurals?
Singular: there's only one kind of plant there
Plural: since there's more than one plant, the label should reflect that
Don't care: as long as I can read it, the details are unimportant

There Are Always Zeppelins

posted Wednesday, 21 September 2005

I was sitting in a meeting in the conference room on the 8th floor of my building this morning when I saw a blimp go by.  Well, it went 'by' in the sense that I could see it; from the size and the haze it was over Edgewood.

Anyway, it occurs to me that there's only one blimp in this area, as far as I know, and that one usually only flies on Sundays.  This led me into interesting speculation over alternate universes, and the fact that alternate universes with Weird Science! pretty much always have zeppelins.  If it's pulp, there must be blimps.

I wonder why that is.  Maybe it's just that lighter-than-air craft went out of style around the time World War II started, so blimps have a strong connotation of the early part of the 20th century, which is the feeling pulp tries to evoke.
