In Her Web She Still Delights

Expansion

posted Tuesday, 8 April 2008

It occurs to me that, for benefit of those who don't play Vanguard (or don't play the crafting game), I should expand upon my little bit in my last post, as it's not exactly clear for those who don't know what I'm talking about.

See, in this game, as well as the usual weapons, armor, bags and whatnot, crafters also make things like roof thatching and bricks and masts and so forth--stuff to build houses (player housing) and ships (player-controlled)1.  However, there are special quests to learn these recipes; you can't get the recipes from the normal trainer, and you can't get the quests from their respective NPCs unless you have a certain level of reputation with that continent's artisan faction2 and are of a specific level (20, 30, and 40 for tiers 3, 4, and 5 respectively).

You get rep, like XP, by doing work orders, which are kind of the mobs of crafting.  My plan is to take each alt and get it 500 rep with its home continent (which will happen well before 20th level, and possibly before 10th).  Then I'll take it and get it 500 with the other two continents; as a side benefit, this will mean I have plenty of rep to do all the continental styles quests several tens of levels before it becomes relevant.  Then repeat the cycle till 2000 with each continent, then 5000.  As far as I can tell, doing things this way will guarantee that I have the correct amounts of rep in plenty of time to get the building materials quests, especially as leveling slows the higher you get.

1: Crafters also make furniture and pillows and wall-hangings and so on, but I believe those are regular recipes learned from the trainer.

2: This is significantly greater than the level of rep you have to have just to do the every-ten-levels quests for the continents' regular-recipe style quests, which means if you can do the house and ship stuff quests you're well past what you need for the style quests.  This is nice.
