When I started doing socks for Liam1, I did the traditional top-down, complete with eye-of-partridge turned heels and all that jazz. These days, though, I'm a total toe-up convert, and it's all for one reason: I love short-row toes. The short-row heels are nice too, but they don't get quite the same pouch feel because of the established tube of the foot; it's the toes that are the most fun. It's really too bad they're right at the beginning, so I don't have anything to look forward to.
Stuff like this almost allows me to understand the folks who say they'd knit even if it didn't result in anything.
1: I remember thinking, "Gee, it'll be a while before he needs any new socks". Well, "a while" has passed and some of those original pairs are starting to get thin spots and even a few holes--easily darned, but holes--and the sock monster has eaten half of one or two pairs. So it's back to socks for me for a bit, which I don't mind too much because it gives me a chance to play with some of the new Essential colors.
