I've just seen about 15 minutes of 300, the movie, based on Frank Miller's graphic novel of the same name, that purports to tell the story of the Spartans at Thermopylae. I have a number of impressions, presented here in no particular order:
- Wait, those aren't the right kind of shields!
- Haven't these guys ever heard of body armor? Who do they think they are, Tuchux?
- So...apparently Xerxes is a goa'uld. As a matter of fact, I think he's Apophis.
- Hey, it's the chick from the new Terminator series. I don't remember her character getting to do much in the book, though.
- If you're gonna make a big deal about the guy not being able to hold his shield right for the phalanx, maybe you should, you know, fight in formation occasionally.
- War rhino? Who the fuck thinks that's a good idea?
- Seriously, the whole Waltz of the Perverts thing was dated when Conan did it, and that was thirty years ago.
- In the book, Ephialtes was pitiable. In the film, he's laughable.
I do wonder what would show up if I watched the whole thing (and before you ask, yes, I have read the graphic novel).
