Why did Peter Criss join a metal band when he wanted to play blues?

"Beth" and "Hard Luck Woman" are easily the most incongruous of KISS's songs, and in both case they're "Peter" songs.  I just don't get it--wasn't the elaborate makeup something of a tipoff that these guys weren't into traditional musical stylings?
