Vowels

posted Thursday, 27 September 2007

I never do anything interesting with vowels.  It's like trying to nail Jello to the wall; I can't get hold of the important distinctions except in the most general way.  Consonants are easy, but vowels are slippery little bastards.  Hence, yet another boring vowel system.

I like see, e like met, a like arm, o like pole, u like blue; ae is a dipthong like eye.  The pure vowels can be rounded or unrounded; rounded is noted with a diaresis: ï, ë, ä, ö, ü.

There.  Boring, but it works.

I think I'm going to declare that roots can't contain i or u, so I can use fronting and backing for grammatical stuff.  This makes me mildly sad, because I like i and u seems underused, but I'm not willing to give up on umlaut for grammar so there it is.  Also, in cases where a root contains more than one vowel, they must all be either rounded or unrounded.
