SC - Review My Post!

posted Wednesday, 14 February 2007

This is a Shameless Commercialism post!

By now you're all aware of my efforts to promote my blog and make a little money from it, which are, I'm pleased to note, going reasonably well so far.  Meanwhile, my most frequent broker for such efforts, PayPerPost, has come up with an idea to make it a little easier to get involved--at least in theory.

The way it works is, I can have a personalized button which I put into posts--even non-PPP posts.  If you read such a post and are interested enough in it, you can click on that button and you'll be taken to PPP, whence you can sign up and get a special opportunity, personalized for you, that will net both of us a little money (around $7); you post something on your blog responding to my post, and we both get paid for it.

Now, this seems like a fine idea on the face of it, but there are some implementation problems.  For one thing, they clearly don't want to promote a sort of postie1 circle jerk, so only those who aren't already signed up for PPP can use the service.  But the problem is, it takes a while to get a blog approved--several days to a week, as the PPP people are pretty swamped under the posties they already have.  By the time a blog's approved, you've likely forgotten what you wanted to write about or aren't interested anymore.  I suppose you might write the blog entry right away and hope, but you'd have to keep it unpublished until your blog was approved because entries posted before the day you turn them in aren't eligible.  This is not an insurmountable problem, but it's sufficiently difficult that I doubt a lot of people are going to go for it.

I'm also a little leery of how...perhaps the word I'm looking for here is "crass".  It might look a little overdone to have the "review this post" button at the bottom of every single post, and the only solution there is to pick and choose.  And I just know that I'd pick the wrong posts, the ones people aren't actually interested in.  So for the nonce, I'm going to have to pass.  It's an interesting idea, but I don't know as it's the way I want to go.
