One of the women in my office just said that the "three rivers" of Pittsburgh are the Monongahela, the Allegheny, and the Youghiogheny. She said she didn't think the Ohio came down to the Point at all.
Which is, I suppose, technically true; since the Ohio starts at the Point, it cannot be said to "come" or "go" there.
But still. N is usually very sensible, but since she's currently sitting less than a mile from the place in question I find the mistake completely inexplicable. Though not, I must admit, as inexplicable as the reason she said it, that being that another woman had to ask. Because it's not as if the Ohio is an important tributary of the frigging Mississippi River or anything; it's not like this area is referred to as the "Ohio Valley" with anything approaching regularity. It's not like there was a special on PBS called "The Mon, the Al, and the O", or that it's still occasionally rerun and often seen in local video stores. It's not like the Three Rivers are a huge symbol in this area...
Sometimes I despair of my race, seriously.
Do you think she is refering to a local slang for the Ohio, and got
confused? Or maybe it's an alternate name for it or something? I doubt
it, but all things are possible.
"Local slang" that I, who have lived in this area my entire life, have
never heard? Also I'm unclear how you get "oh-hi-oh" out of
"yock-a-gay-nee", or vice versa.
Right. I was afraid of that. You shouldn't just get her a map, you should
get one tattooed to her forehead so everytime she looks in the mirror
she'll get a geography lesson.
