Earth Day

posted Monday, 24 April 2006

I did not know Saturday was Earth Day until I was on my way home with a new blueberry plant and some strawberry starts, but the coincidence was nice.  I fear for those starts, though; they were bone dry when I took them out of the package, the Lowe's people having seemingly neglected to water them.  I had the same problem last year, and they never did take.  I think there may be a lesson here, that being "Don't buy strawberry starts at Lowe's".

The blueberry, however, is quite healthy looking, and I think it (and its SO) should get some azalea food when I get home in case the rain washed the acid out of their dirt.  It's not like you can realistically over-acid or over-water blueberries; they'll grow happily in soil with the pH of vinegar that's sodden enough to qualify as "marsh" rather than "dirt".  (This fails to explain the major place I've seen wild blueberries, out behind my grandparents' place in an old stone quarry with soil that is more accurately desribed as relatively-coherent sand, but ours is not to reason why.)

The irises are making leaves happily, though there's one in the Superstition pot that seems to be dead.  If it doesn't put out any leaves I'll just let it go till transplanting time and then chuck it.  I fear that the irises in general need bigger pots, but there's not a heck of a lot I can do about that, lacking a yard.

I think the pansies are coming up, but I don't know what their seedlings are supposed to look like and after last year's debacle with the not-really-columbine I am wary.  Morning glories, thankfully, are very easy to spot--their leaves, even as sprouts, are very distinctive.

I'm not sure how good the strawberries are yet, but I have a bunch of plants I moved last year, and I'm hoping to get them to bloom now that they've taken over the planter. If they fail to suck, would you like some of them?

Yeah, probably; looks like the ones I bought are indeed quite dead. I think I'm going to go to Lowe's and tell them, "Look, guys, these things have to be watered while in their packages..."
