Would you want the rows in your garden to be labelled with singulars or plurals?
Singular: there's only one kind of plant there
Plural: since there's more than one plant, the label should reflect that
Don't care: as long as I can read it, the details are unimportant

Suprise! (Knitty Winter 07)

posted Friday, 15 February 2008

The "surprise" patterns for Knitty's Winter 07 issue are up--well, they've likely been up for a while seeing as it's less than three weeks till new-issue time, but I just saw them.  I mention again my pet peeve: if everyone knows you're going to be putting up an additional couple of patterns, even if not exactly when, said patterns are not a surprise.  They're a bonus, maybe, but not a surprise.  Anyway.

B.S. Johnson by Sarah Lilly: A heavy hat with an asymmetrical cable pattern.  I think there are short rows involved, and it might be something I'd wear in a less bland color.  Plus, bonus points for a Pratchett reference.

Bell Curve by Kira Dulaney: This is what a knitted skirt should be like.  Lovely details, and if the greys are starting to get to me that's only because it's February and we're having our annual storm.  It's a little less full than I personally like my skirts, but that's a matter of taste and the shape she picked, a fairly gentle A-line, is going to look good on a lot of people.  I'd still worry about sagging in the seat, but that's not something you can totally avoid with this sort of thing even in woven fabric and good yarn choice can help it be resilient.  I'm not going to be knitting it--like I said, not as full as I prefer--but it's a well-designed pattern and looks great.  Also, I *heart* any pattern in which my bust size isn't even the next-to-largest.

Modern Lace Henley by Pam Allen: I'm in love.  Maybe not in that color, which IMO is a bit dark for a garment with so many little holes in it, but I love the total effect.  The neckline is deep enough to look good on me, and the stand-up collar is a fabulous detail.  I might make the sleeves a little longer to cover the elbows--I get chilly in the office when my elbows are bare--but otherwise I'm just in love.
