In Her Web She Still Delights

Getting Political

posted Wednesday, 3 January 2007

I guess, despite what I thought, that I can't be a feminist.

I mean, I thought I had the qualifications, you know?  I earn my own living.  I am far more concerned with comfort than fashion in clothing.  I wear makeup and high heels only for really special occasions.  I don't do all the housework.  I don't look like a model, and I don't particularly want to.  My bust is rather generous, but it got that way without the help of any silicone.

But these things aren't enough.  If a woman wants to look like a model, and can do it without wrecking her health, I don't care.  It's her body; she can do what she wants with it.  This means I'm not a feminist, because I refuse to condemn her for not looking like a "real woman".

If a woman wants to work inside her home, for no pay, I don't care.  It's her life; she can do what she wants with it.  This means I'm not a feminist, because I don't gripe about how she's betraying the cause by taking on a traditionally female job.

If a woman wants to be a sex worker, I don't care.  It's her time; she can do what she wants with it.  This means I'm not a feminist, because I don't believe that every woman in prostitution and porn is a poor abused victim/minion of the Dreaded Patriarchy.

If a woman's heterosexual, I don't care.  It's her vagina; she can do what she wants with it.  This means I'm not a feminist, because I don't go along with the idea that all hetero sex is automatically rape.

I wear skirts a lot (because they're comfortable).  I shave my legs (because, regardless of the social programming that causes me to feel so, it makes me feel better about myself).  I live with a man (because I like him).  I don't sleep with women (because I'm not attracted to them).  I work as a secretary (because I have to do something to pay the bills).  I refuse to fall into the trap of declaiming that I want women to have choices (as long as they're choices I approve of).  For all of these reasons, and probably many more I haven't thought of, I'm not a feminist.

Oh, any number of people. Google for "I Blame the Patriarchy", for example. Though her beef is generally with aspects of traditional femininity that she doesn't like (such as sleeping with men and wearing makeup) rather than those she does (like knitting and childrearing).

No, no spiffy uniforms--that would be fashion. ;)

Damn. Are you allowed to run around naked then? Somehow, I doubt it, but its worth a shot. If you can't have fashion and you can't have nakedness...what can you have? A burlap sack maybe?

Oh, you can wear anything you want as long as you are careful to care only about its functionality. Because 15,000 years of human society in which people use their clothes to look impressive, and several million years of evolution in which looking impressive to potential mates became an instinctive desire, must bend to the political reality that women--I'm sorry, "wymyn"--only care how they look if they're gender traitors who are minions of the Patriarchy. And also uniforms are a male thing and therefore corrupt. </sarcasm>

Oh, her. I don't have time for radical orthodoxies in any other field, and I don't intend to make time for them here. I recommend Pandagon.net instead.

I am also fond of Feministing. :)

I don't read Twisty either (except when I'm in the mood for some hardcore fanatic-mocking). She's the type who sees horrible conspiracies in things like the design of purses, and I don't have time for it.
